Poet Visit

On Friday, the school received a visit from Carlos Andre Gomez, the award-winning Colombian American poet, speaker, actor, and equity and inclusion strategist from New York who is taking part in the current Bradford Literary Festival. Carlos worked with a year 8 class, performing various poems on the themes of inclusivity and diversity, talking about his life and answering questions from the students. One of the most moving poems was a piece named ‘Where Are You From’ which addressed heritage and family. At one point in the visit, he asked the students to suggest the first and last words of a poem, suggest what the poem would be about and give it a title. We were then treated to an improvised poem named The Chair. Carlos took the time to read pieces written by a First Story student and offered some thoughts on their writing. We are hoping to invite Carlos back next year for a longer performance and writing project.
