Our Reach students visit a construction site

Our Reach students visit a construction site

Recently, across the Co-op Academies Trust, we launched Reach. An employability programme which brings careers to life! A pioneering group of our Year 9 students are taking part in this programme.

To get a look at the workings of a local industry we visited East Leeds Free School. It’s a new school, currently under construction by Galliford Try and Imtech.

As it’s a real working construction site it was safety first, with us all wearing high-visibility jackets and helmets. Everyone looked really funny but not as much as Miss Danielle who had to wear size 7 boots instead of her usual 4! We quickly learned how vital this protective clothing was to keep everyone safe on this busy construction site.

It was such a fantastic opportunity, Galliford Try and Imtech gave us a really up close and behind the scenes look at the construction industry. Our students were able to speak directly with people who’d chosen this career path. This really personal feedback was invaluable to our students who might be considering a similar career.

So what are the big things we learned from the day? Despite its reputation as a male-dominated field, construction is for everyone and anyone. You can also earn a really good salary and it’s eye opening how many job roles are involved when building a school.

If you’re a Grange student and think a career in construction could be for you, have a chat with our Careers Team if you’d like any advice.

We’re sure that our students found the day really helpful. A massive thank you to Galliford Try and Imtech.
